The Spectacular Disgrace That is Geraldine Ferraro [ by James Linkin] [The Frame Game]

March 16, 2008

I have previously complained in this space about the first woman ever to be nominated by a major political party for the Federal Executive, but the scandalous disgrace of her utterances about Barack Obama have not received nearly enough play.

Ferraro continues to stand by her racist comments about Obama’s candidacy and, like Don Imus, Michael Richard, Bill O’Reilly, and countless others before her, she is utterly indignant that anyone would think she is who she has revealed herself to be.

Remember that as recently as a mere three months ago, Obama’s candidacy was considered a long shot BECAUSE he is black. Does anyone doubt that if, say, Jack Kemp had said that Hillary Clinton had gotten as far as she has only because she is a woman, that such a remark would be sexist?

Our corrosive social prejudices will persist only as long as we refuse to acknowledge them for what they are. Take a long look in the mirror, Geraldine. Obama’s candidacy is far less novel than was yours 24 years ago, and he has done far, far more than you to earn his place in the American political landscape. Get over it.

  1. Here’s the Ferraro quoted from a pro-Obama website:

“If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept.”

Here’s how I deconstruct this paragraph. If Obama was John Edwards or Joe Biden or any other current white, Democrat he would have no chance against Hillary Clinton.  <So far that’s true as proven by the primaries.>

He is lucky that he is a young, passionate, and articulate speaker with little Congression history to defend.

Now for the race part.  If that makes one a racist, then we need to find another word for facing facts about race.

Hillary Clinton has the Democratic Women’s vote, she’s a novelty act in the broad pageantry of Presidential politics, but from the start she had tremendous name recognition and a killer war chest.

How does one combat SuperWoman?  With a young, passionate, articulate white Congressman with little experience?  Not hardly.

How about a smart, articulate, black man who talks about the audacity of hope and can’t we all get along.

Well, he’s really half-black, like Tiger Woods, and he hasn’t represented a black district so he isn’t an Al Sharpton black.  This guy is urbane and smart and, well, gosh, people like him, they really like him.

And glory to God!  He hates the war and wasn’t around to vote for it.  Now the far left start cheering him on and sending him money.  Liberal guilt finds a better candidate than a wealthy white woman, so more money pours in to the Obama campaign.

Hillary’s cash cow’s in Hollywood ditch her like a plain prom date and even Oprah proclaims “He’s the one”.

Blacks in primaries are voting for him almost unanimously and in some states that’s a large chunk of the total Dems.  The caucuses are overrun by his fanatical followers because, let’s face it, Hillary doesn’t generate a lot of fervor.

So, here we are.  Hillary owns all the big states but Illinois.  Obama wins big nearly everywhere else.

Now, does any one out there really think that Obama’s race did not give him the edge needed to beat out Hillary Clinton for the nomination?
