May 31, 2008Anyone who thinks otherwise should consider the following fact: severely violent weather, the kind that causes loss of life or mass displacements, is now four times more frequent than it was just 30 years ago. And no country is more affected by these severe weather incidents than ours.
Check out the chart accompanying this short piece in the NYT by Charles Blow. Most notable is that the cost of all these weather-related emergencies exceeds even our war spending.
Jimmy Carter was right. The moral imperative to act immediately to reduce, even to decimate, carbon-based energy consumption is both compelling and immediate. The prissy far-less-than-half measures proposed by our presidential candidates are laughably inadequate, or would be if this weren’t an existential crisis for humanity.
